Loved this theme one I figured out what was going on. I struggled a little bit with 40A, though, because I wasn't really paying attention and counted all nine Es and couldn't think of a phrase that included "ninees"...
Elsewhere, I struggled with BAMA/EGAL/BETH/MARCY/AGEE. Just a really nasty section crammed with obscurities, if you ask me. Which you didn't, but I'll say it anyway.
LGA was a complete mystery even after getting it via the perps. And then I had my V8 moment.
Similar experience with COS, although the eventual V8 moment wasn't nearly as rewarding.
Got lucky guessing TERI for 18A, as I couldn't think of another cast member. Got even luckier with BEHAR at 65A.
Oh -- and I learned today that RKO apparently refers to particular theaters and not just the movie studio. Who knew?
Good Morning, Marti and friends. I thought this was a tad easier than the usual Thursday puzzle, but it was on my second pass that I could complete the puzzle. Seeing all those TTTTTT's together gave me a bit of a start, then I realized what we were looking for.
Here is a chart of the Hebrew alphabet. As Marti noted, Hebrew is read from right to left, so the first letter is Alef. Also remember, that the spelling is a transliteration, so spellings of the letters (and words) often differ.
The Auburn/BAMA rivalry has reached criminal levels when a 'Bama fan poisoned trees on the Auburn campus.
We celebrated the 4th by watching the fireworks on the levee. A big orange moon was on the horizon as a backdrop to the fireworks. The Navy Band accompanied the show. And, it was relatively cool in southern so it was a very pleasant evening.
I hope PK's' house survived her new neighbor's fireworks activities!

My EZ-est Thursday ever. Seemed like Monday to me. Perhaps it was tilted toward oldsters or New Yorkers.

For once, I got the theme, and that allowed me to breeze right through this one.
It was in the Osaka airport where I first encountered in-the-floor toilets, and in-the-men's-room female attendants. Can you spell culture shock?
This easy puzzle had a clever theme. I was on Ed's wave length right away. The NW fell quickly. On getting SAILS I thought of sails the seven seas, even though it was too long. Then I started getting adjacent CCCC and saw the theme and filled in the other two theme answers.
I saved the north center for last. I knew the Hebrew letter ended in TH. When I had TIDE in the south center, I was able to fill in BAMA and BETH and that section fell.
We often hiked near Mt. Marcy in the Adirondacks when I was in the hiking club.
I hoped you all had a pleasant 4th. We stayed home in the blessed AC and ate fresh corn and homemade German potato salad. In the evening I enjoyed the music and fireworks on TV broadcast from Washington DC and afterwards the Boston POPS while reading Aztec. Marti, it really is hard to put down.
nice and easy puzzle for a thursday probably perfect way to restart the week after the holiday. Used the downs to help out with the first theme answer then knew what to look for. 7,8,9

learning moment: thought that Escargot was singular and plural, so hesitated before putting in escargots.
Made my way through with perps, but definitely a Northeasterners puzzle with Marcy and birch beer.
DO, Years ago there used to be just a round hole, no flushing. On trains the tracks could be seen rushing by beneath the hole. I read that parts of some countries still have these.
Modern Japan has porcelan flush toilets (about one inch high and several inches deep) embedded in the floor. Usually these days there is a choice bewteen that and western style.
In the schools I saw there were only the in the floor types. The floor was very messy.
I suppose that is why in homes, schools, and ryokans (traditional inns),even if there are western facilities, you must exchange your indoor slippers for bathroom slippers that will stay in the bathroom.
No outdoor shoes are worn indoors in homes, schools, and some temples..

Clever theme, but otherwise, I thought it was easy for a Thursday. Marti, I had the same question as you on 17a. In fact, I thought of tugboat pilot, or a 'salty' pilotguiding a vessel up the Mississippi from its mouth at the Delta, before thinking of Delta Airlines. Fun clue. On Inuit - ALEUT, the clue is OK I guess, although I initially disagreed with it because they live in different environments and culture. The languages are not mutually intelligible. Sort of like saying French is a relative of Spanish.
2 airports in Queens, too, LGA, and JFK. BH drives an Impreza SUBARU.
Sure gonna be another hot one, today.
If you go back to the link for Mount Marcy, look southwest of the peek and find Lake Tear of the Clouds, headwater of the Hudson River. Zoom in that last click and it is labeled.
The Street View guy can connect you to many photos taken in the area.
Argyle, someday I will get over there. We have kayaked further down the Hudson, near Glens falls, but Lake Tear of the Clouds looks beautiful.

Wow! I felt like this was a Monday puzzle EXCEPT for WBS—BAMA/BETH/MARCY/AGEE which made it a DNF for me. The puzzle was available early—did it last night while listening to our town’s firework show. Local firemen shoot fireworks over our river.
I drive a Subaru. I had never heard of birch beer until last week after walking around Fort Kearney in Nebraska in the heat, we stopped at its Soldier’s Saloon and the barkeeper convinced us to try ice cold birch beer. It was great! I don’t think it is sold anywhere near me.

Good morning, folks. Thank you, Ed Sessa, for a very good, but unusual puzzle. Thank you, Marti, for the great write-up. Sure enjoyed the Boston Pops 1812 Overture.
Got the whole NW corner right off the bat. My brother-in-law was a Delta Pilot his whole career. Had to retire at 60.
The North Center was a blank, at first.
Got the NE corner.
The theme came relatively easily. Got SAILS, then the C's started appearing. Very clever. That helped with the other two theme answers.
A few tough ones; MARCY, ALICES, ERIQ, and MOYERS. Perps and Wags to the rescue.
We had our fireworks last night. Great show! They had a food fest as well. I had a pulled pork sandwich with BBQ sauce and a Blooming Onion, with a couple of $6.00 beers (Sam Adams, no less).
Today it will be 101 here. Can't wait.

We had a super fireworks display in our little city (pop 1534) last night. It drew lots of well-behaved folks from all over eastern Montgomery County. We went down to the park this morning to help with the cleanup, and found there wasn't all that much to clean up this year. Nice to see.
YR, that Japan trip was in '69, the same week that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. We got to watch it in our hotel room. We got a super view of Mt. Fuji when we took the bullet train to Tokyo. Later we stayed at an inn in one of the national parks. There was a water "thingy" mounted on the wall with a spigot at the bottom. Cast into the metal were the instructions: Open - Crose. Made me smile.
I would like to note that the linked "Alice's Restaurant" is the '96 version with "commentary about Chip Carter (President Jimmy Carter’s son), Richard Nixon, and a certain infamous 18½ minute gap…". Very funny.

Fun puzzle, but having recently been to a music conference in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mtns. of NC, my mind first interpreted the "Like a dotted note, in mus." as meaning to give it extra time value. The 7 C's corrected that. Fun running the sayings thru my head to come up with the answers.
Trying to stay cool during 100+ temps. Swim club outdoor pool is like tepid bath water - not refreshing.
My h.s. BFF got to conduct the Des Moines Symphony playing Stars and Stripes Forever in their July 4th concert. Great gig after 65 yrs.

I see most of you found this easier than I did. Too many unknowns crossing each other for me. I missed BaMa/Beth, Marcy,rEesE/selEs/tEo, rKos/OsaKa. Only capital letters were missing, but I wasn't thinking of 180s for uies, so had "an" before the 'e's, didn't count them, and then was left wondering about the connection. I also didn't know but perped STAC, BEHAR, TIDE (sport!)
Was stuck with no internet, landline or TV this morning until a few minutes ago. The joys of bundling! Who knows what was wrong? I was only the third person to call and complain, but maybe everyone else was still abed then.

What a fun puzzle! I started easily in the NW and it seemed this was going to be easy for a Thursday. For the most part it was - I just got hung up in the area of SALAAM-OSAKA-RKO-MOYERS. I was actually thinking of 'Salami' for 46A because of something I once saw with the "Three Stooges." Wow ... how bad is that! :-) I finally worked it out and finished with no other problems. Loved the theme - caught on with the eight Es. Thanks for the enjoyment this morning, Ed Sessa.

This puzzle was on my wave length, astonishingly! I got the clever theme when SAIL and all the "C's" appeared. Thanks for the EGALly clever blog, Marti.
I did have trouble with the "G" in the EGAL/AGEE cross and opted for a B. For some reason I ended up with an I in the RKOS, although I was thinking the right thing and just didn't finish the letter.
Hahtoolah, thanks for asking. My house is still standing, although an apartment building across town caught fire from careless fireworks. Melted the vinyl siding! I heard the firetrucks go.
We had TWO hours of huge aerial fireworks in our heavily "treed" section of town. Two areas on the golf course a block from me and the college stadium were sending up breathtaking displays. I watched out my bathroom window.
The wind changed back and forth. One huge golden star shower burst very low over my backyard and the party house next door. My heart stopped as those sparks plunged toward us. I could hear the coals rattling down thru the big maple tree, pelting my roof and pinging on the air conditioner. Several girls on the next-door patio yelped.
Despite 102 degree weather, nothing ignited at my place that I've found. After the "boys" posted about roofs last night, I remembered I'd upgraded my shingles to fire-retardant cement coated when they redid my roof last fall. That helped me feel better.
The "kids" partying in their skimpies next door did set the hedge on fire with the tiki torches. They poured beer on it and moved the torches.
I had fun with one young stud. He sauntered down the hill and ducked out of the patio lights behind a four-trunked mimosa tree where he was hidden from patio view. I waited a second then turned on the back yard flood light.
There he stood spotlighted in his glorious birthday suit in direct sight line of my kitchen window. He jumped a foot while "hosing down" my grass through the fence.
Actually, I was trying to do him a favor. I wanted him to see the poison ivy twining around the mimosa he was leaning against. Better to know what caused that nasty rash he may get.
I chuckled long over that one. The party broke up around 3:30 a.m. when they rolled trash cans to the curb for today's pickup. Then the neighborhood could sleep.
Brilliant puzzle, Ed! This is one of these puzzles I 'got' without entirely 'getting' it--until your write-up, Marti. But what fun to see EE turn into EEE and TT turn into TTT and then TTTTT and on and on and on. I was totally intrigued but in the end also flummoxed. Okay, "SAIL THE seas" made sense to me, but THE GAY TEAS"? I just missed the numbers altogether, but I love puzzles with a tricky but gettable gimmick, even if I didn't get it.

My cat was so traumatized by the heat and fireworks going off across the street and strange people. By 2 p.m. he went into his plastic hidey-hole house on the porch and refused to come out. Didn't eat supper. Didn't drink water. I was afraid I'd find him dead this morning. But he met me at the door complaining loudly about the situation.
PK, are your young neighbors renters or owners? I once had renters next door like yours. Happily they only stayed about 4 months.

Hola Everyone, I had a hard time with the upper mid section today. There were so many unknowns--Teri, Egal, Bama, that it went begging for a time. I started to fill in what I did know in other areas and The Gay TTT emerged. Then the v-8 can hit me hard! Ah! 9 t's. Once that was in I went back and filled in the C's and E's.
I've never heard of Birch Beer. It must be a local thing. It doesn't sound very good in any case.
I started off with I-Pod, rather than I-Mac and Rasa being another unknown, that NE corner was also a rather barren fill.
With perps, and WAGS I finally filled in the entire puzzle. My one lookup was Beth, for the letter preceding Gimel. That one fill gave me the foothold that I needed to finish up that upper center section.
I don't think I've ever done a puzzle with successive letters which were all the same. What fun. It must have been hard to make the clues fit those letters which were all the same.

Fireworks are illegal here in our area but you wouldn't have known that by the pops, bangs, hisses, and booms that went on for over two hours after dark.
Some of the firecrackers were so loud that they sounded like electric transformers blowing out. I don't know how we can curb the illegal setting off of fireworks, but a law is a law.
Fires have occurred in the past and the fireworks going off everywhere around us was a bit unnerving.
We had the paint burned on the top of our car one year when someone decided to use our car for a launching pad for their fireworks. We weren't home at the time and found the mess when we returned.
If parents condone fireworks at their homes, how are children going to learn?

Montana, the kids next door are renters, guy & gal, unmarried, both EMT's/bartenders (what a combination: get your customers liquored up, let 'em drive drunk, then go pick up the pieces?). This is the 7th set of people who occupied the house next door since I've been here 9 years. After the 2nd set I quit trying to be BFF. Now I'm just friendly in passing. A couple, I avoided at all cost.
Chickie, I'd like fireworks banned. I'm terrorized every July 4. My neighborhood is actually like being in a war zone. Last night I went out and yelled at the darling little adopted Chinese girl I usually enjoy. She has a big tree over her driveway, so she came over to my house and was setting off things in my drive with mom watching. With the third one to buzz up and hit my house, I lost it. They thought I was joking when I told them to go home. I've had too many fire experiences to ever enjoy fireworks. I said as much. Probably lost a friend. Don't care.
Hello everybody. Fun puzzle today, and thanks to Marti's writeup for clearing some things up, such as COS and STAC. When someone says "dotted note" I immediately think of a, well, um, dotted note, which is a note with a dot to the right of it, the dot meaning make the duration of the note half again as long. (A normally one-beat note becomes 1 1/2 beats, for example.) So even after filling STAC from the perps I couldn't think of what the heck it meant.
The first sequence of letters I filled were the T's in the SW, all from the Down words. Then I counted them, saying in my head "nine tees" and then, click, I got it. From there I knew to go ahead and fill in advance the multiple E's and C's. Lots of fun.
The BETH, BAMA, EGAL, AGEE section almost did me in, but I took a lucky wag. Way back in 2nd grade we were all required to memorize the Hebrew and Greek alphabets, but I long since forgot them. I'll bet most of my then-classmates did too.
Did you know Subaru means The Pleiades? Hence the logo.
Wanted KOWTOW for 46A at first, but ENOLA and OSAKA disabused me of that.

I don't see hitchhikers anymore. When I see a woman running up the large hill nearby leading to a bus stop, I feel the need to offer her a ride. I wouldn't hesitate to hitch if I were stranded someplace. I'm guessing it would be a tough sell these days though.
I enjoyed the Capital Fourth telecast last night. Fireworks and Sousa marches -- they're the best. I almost begin to tear up at the piccolo part of The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Those sky lanterns looks like a lot of fun to me. I would hesitate to try them around here for fear of starting a fire. I wonder if they are legal?
I get at least one call every day, right about this time, from charities wanting further contributions or home remodeling contractors or ...? Today's call was from KCET, our local PBS station. I would have donated but Barbara has been noticing that we often get called several times a year and end up donating more often than we intend. So since she's not home right now, I told them to call back later.
I always think of Jazzbumpa playing trombone when I hear Sousa marches. I bet the trombone part for Rossini's La Gazza Ladra overture would be fun, too.
I would hitchhike if I had to, but probably would not get picked up. I would not pick a hitchhiker up. Rutger Hauer was terrific in "The Hitchhiker" movie.
Chickie, my wife and I feel the same way about people who light fireworks in their back or front yards in spite of the fact it is illegal here.

-Omaha had fireworks illegal for years and finally gave up as the neighborhoods lit up like a war zone anyway. Who knew Omahans would be willing to drive a few blocks to buy stuff in the burbs? Now the city gets the tax and license fee. The same logic might work for marijuana.
-Two houses in Omaha caught fire from used fireworks even though they had been doused with a garden hose.
-PK, you should have posted video of your miscreant neighbors’ activities on youtube.
-Toities in Europe are old and dirty but at least I could be seated – for a half a euro.
-I also love the piccolo descant in Stars And Stripes Forever. It is very moving.

This puzzle was not easy but I had more answers than I usually do on Thur.
We had company yesterday (July 4th) so we were busy cleaning early in the week. Didn't have time for puzzles. All fireworks in our area were canceled due to heat and no rain for several weeks. Today temp. is 102 degrees.
I looked at yesterdays puzzle briefly. 60D caught my eye-Anabaptist. My family on my Dad's side were Mennonites. Our original ancesters were Amish. I've always been glad they didn't stay Amish. I grew up in EUB and Methodist church.

Thank you all for your birthday wishes. CC, yours was especially touching. My husband hates to go to the movies and he hates Red Lobster, but he takes me both places on my birthday because I like them. Saw the latest Madea movie. What can I say, I even enjoy Moe, Larry and Curly (Nyuk Nyuk) occasionally. Ate my favorite: Garlic shrimp pasta and brought enough cheddar biscuits home for breakfast. Our server guessed me 15 years younger than I actually am. She got a HUGE tip! For those who invited me back, CC`s rules say no "religion". I can`t live up to that so I`l just drop in occasionally. I got all the way to the top of MtWTF, moved my mouse wrong and didn't get to see them come down. Couldn't believe they went all that way without a rest or drink.
About the flash mob; what happened to the girl who started it by putting a coin in the hat. She was still standing there at 4:57 and seconds later she was gone, like a scene from the TV show "Missing".
I wanted to see if she would put another coin in the hat.

fermatprime, I hadn't looked at the comments before but I did just now. There was one racist comment that I saw; otherwise most people seemed to enjoy it as we did. What a stirring piece of music! There are bound to be a few jerks lurking around the Internet. We are fortunate to have so few here I think.
